In a landmark move for sports and education, Mayor Brandon Johnson officially proclaimed the week of April 26 to May 3 as Chicago HBCU Baseball Week. This announcement reflects a commitment to celebrating the legacy and future of African American contributions to baseball and education. The week-long celebration will be highlighted by the Inaugural HBCU Baseball Classic, a thrilling face-off between the Alabama A&M Bulldogs and the Prairie View A&M Panthers at the iconic Wrigley Field.
A Celebration of Legacy and Inspiration
At the heart of this proclamation is a deep appreciation for the role Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played in creating opportunities and advancing the prospects of countless young African Americans. Mayor Johnson emphasized this in his remarks, stating, “This event honors the legacy of African Americans in the sport while inspiring young people across our city to see themselves in baseball, in higher education, and in leadership.”
A Community Affair
The announcement came with a promise not only to celebrate sports but also to foster inspiration and inclusiveness across the city's communities. Present at the press conference were Tiffany N. Harrell, PLCCA Marketing Manager, and Lundy Swilley, Senior Director of Administration Executive Office. Both individuals represent the collaborative effort to bring this significant event to fruition and underlined the community’s enthusiastic reception.
Honoring the Pillars of the Community
A special highlight during the HBCU Baseball Classic will be the honoring of Bishop Dr. Claude Porter, the founder of PLCCA Inc, at bottom of the third inning. This tribute is a nod to Dr. Porter's enduring impact on the community and his dedication to empowerment and leadership through initiatives that bridge education, sports, and civic engagement.
Looking Ahead
As Chicago gears up for the celebration, excitement is building around the potential impact of the HBCU Baseball Week. This event not only promises a showcase of athletic talent but also a reaffirmation of Chicago’s connection to, and respect for, the rich history of African American achievements in sports and education. The week serves as an invitation to all Chicagoans and visitors to engage with and celebrate this historic occasion. Through games, stories, and shared dreams, Chicago HBCU Baseball Week is set to inspire a new generation of leaders and athletes.
