On May 2nd, Wrigley Field witnessed a historical first as two HBCU baseball teams, the Alabama A&M Bulldogs and the Prairie View A&M Panthers, graced its field—a milestone echoing through its 112-year history. This significant event was part of the Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic Week, proclaimed by Mayor Brandon Johnson to run from April 26 to May 3. With the excitement akin to the famed HBCU Football Classics, the week was vibrant, filled with marching bands, youth clinics, and community events that celebrated the spirit of excellence and unity.

Honoring a Community Leader

A particular highlight of the Inaugural HBCU Baseball Classic was honoring Bishop Dr. Claude Porter, whose visionary leadership has profoundly impacted countless lives over six decades. As the founder of the Proviso Leyden Council for Community Action (PLCCA), Dr. Porter dedicated his life to fostering education, empowerment, and self-sufficiency within the community. His philosophy of providing a "hand up, not a hand out" has laid the foundation for transformative programs that continue to thrive today.

Recognizing his contributions, the organizers of the HBCU Classic chose to pay tribute to Dr. Porter during this landmark event. PLCCA brought 70 students and staff to witness and partake in this historic celebration, ensuring that the legacy of passion, dedication, and community service that Dr. Porter epitomizes was front and center.

A Historic Game

The energy and enthusiasm peaked as the Alabama A&M Bulldogs clashed with the Prairie View A&M Panthers, culminating in a thrilling victory for the Bulldogs with a score of 10-7. The game symbolized more than competition; it was a celebration of heritage, talent, and the inspirational power of HBCUs.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Mayor Johnson's words encapsulated the event’s essence: “This event honors the legacy of African Americans in the sport while inspiring young people across our city to see themselves in baseball, in higher education, and in leadership.”

The event was not only a groundbreaking moment in sports but also a testament to the enduring impact of leaders like Bishop Dr. Claude Porter.

With hearts full and spirits high, the community looks forward to future events inspired by this legacy, where sports serve as a platform for change, education, and empowerment—a fitting tribute to the dream Dr. Porter helped shape into reality.
